The PUFFClicker3 facilitates the easy transition to a new inhaler type by supporting 101 SNOMED-coded inhalers for both pMDI and DPIs. It offers built-in graphical usage instructions for all of the inhalers it supports. To enhance inhaler adherence for patients of all ages and for all respiratory disorders that call for inhaler treatment, the PUFFClicker3 smart inhaler was created. It is well known that patients rarely follow their prescribed inhaler regimens for chronic respiratory disorders; around 50% of patients do not take their drugs as advised. Research indicates that in order to manage symptoms and lower the chance of exacerbations, about 75% of patients must adhere to their inhaled medicine schedule.

Overcoming multiple technical obstacles influenced the PUFFClicker’s creation. A notable hindrance that patients faced was the challenge of connecting gadgets to a smartphone through Bluetooth pairing. In order to solve the issue, the company eliminated the need for smartphones to communicate data to parents/caregivers and healthcare professionals from the device. The growing number of schools that forbid younger students from using smartphones is another element affecting the design. As a result, the PUFFClicker3 will use mobile Internet of Things technology to send data, giving parents and caregivers access to real-time updates. Whether at home or at school, the tool will notify parents when their child or young person is abusing relief inhalers.

The PUFFClicker3 was developed with early support from an Innovate UK Smart Award. It offers patients, parents, caregivers and healthcare professionals the benefit of real-time inhaler adherence monitoring data while also helping to eliminate smartphone dependency.

Equally important is the way the PUFFClicker3 reduces health inequities. Instructions are provided via its 16-language interactive touch screen, eliminating the need for a smartphone connection and supporting people who are hesitant to use technology. The Med-Tech Innovation Expo at the NEC will be hosted by the firm.
